It is so encouraging to see the topic of loneliness being discussed more openly. What was once a topic people were reluctant to talk about is now gaining traction in the popular press, in shows, podcasts, books, articles, meditation topics, etc.

In my own experience, my most lonely time was shortly after moving State. I was busy and had many tasks to occupy my time, however I was lacking in social connections and friendships nearby. For anyone who knows me it will come as no surprise to hear my first call was to try exercise classes in the area. These were enjoyable and I’m certain the movement helped keep my mental health in check, however they did not offer anything in the connection capacity beyond the brief interactions with other participants.

Not to known for my patience I then took to trying groups in the local art museum, the library and on-line with “meet ups” app (www.meetups.com) where I tried hiking with pretty diverse groups. I admit I went along to the groups with some doubts and reservations, it was a first for me and I wasn’t sure. Whilst none of these resulted in long term friendships for me, what they did do was give me hope and supported my mindset to keep looking and forward momentum. I’m so glad I tried! I then had a chance meeting with a wonderful inclusive, welcoming sort who I now count as a fab friend. What started with a casual chat lead to great conversation, then introductions to others and many friendships developed.

Now clearly there are many ways we can be lonely. It is possible to be surrounded by others we know and yet still feel lonely. We all need those meaningful connections, to be seen and heard for who we are. This article is a great read on this subject:

I will say, as cliched as it may sound, I would not change this time. I learned so much about myself and what mattered to me. I’ve had the conversation with others and we all seem agreed, we want to help one another. I’m using my voice to make this topic less taboo and I hope you will too.
