Feedback from clients is invariably positive when we meet outside and walk for their coaching session. Some have been heard to say they don’t know if getting outside & walking had as much of an impact as the talking. As Health Coach I’m there to support desired changes and if confidence & self efficacy comes to my clients when they are in motion, in a green space it works for me! I will add the combo of walking and talking is definitely where I see the win for most.
Something beyond the well known benefits of being in nature is the concept of increased understanding of self. Have you ever had a sense of awe at an incredible sunset, in a forest, on a beach, at the Grand Canyon, or other such sight? This can impact us in many ways. Perhaps the increase in endorphins gave you a mood boost, perhaps the scale helped you gain perspective on your current concern or issues, the historic nature of some sights gives clarity on our mortality and drive to change perspectives. Turns out we don’t always need National Geographic worthy sites to give us this increased awareness and understanding of self. Could be as simple as a walk in the park ….
The benefits of nature for social, cognitive, physical, and emotional well-being have been well documented in counseling and well-being research, highlighting its capacity for building restoration and resilience. Less research has adopted a more focused exploration of the role of nature for the understanding of self for enhancing well-being.
